Thinking of summer

No significant improvement to my health today so unfortunately that means another day off.

Without anything to write about I thought I'd share a video from early last summer at the British Milers Club Watford Grand Prix.

Watford seems to get a bit of a hard time but it has the most fantastic sheltered track with a perfect park for warming up. There's never been a breath of air any time I've raced there either which makes it my favourite track in the country.

The Grand Prix is a really special event. The BMC put on around 30 races, half 800s and half 1500s and the races are seeded to try and get everyone competing with people at the same level in an effort to run quick times.

This was my first race of the year under four minutes. The winner of the race beat me by about the same margin in Saturday's XC, although that was over five miles rather than 1500m, which bodes well for this summer if I can get healthy!

Sick

Today I took my first ever sick day since entering the world of work. I'd lasted over four years which I think is a pretty decent run but something has got the better of me. No running today as a result.

I'm feeling a lot better than I was last night so with any luck I'll be back to something close to full health tomorrow.

Suffering on Sunday

I didn't feel too well immediately after yesterday's race and I felt a bit shivery. That soon passed after I went out for dinner and had a significant amount of red wine. This morning however I woke up and didn't feel quite myself. Despite this I went out to do my long run.

The pace was slow throughout. Last week the Crystal Palace loop took me 1.47, today it was 1.49. Given that on a good day I can blast this out in 1.35 I knew something was up. I got home and started to feel a lot worse.

I'm currently in bed trying to rest up. Not too sure what's up but I think I've got a mild flu. With any luck it's a 24 hour bug rather than anything more serious.

Surrey League Ham - Match 3

As I mentioned briefly yesterday, this week has been a bit of a killer work wise and as a result I haven't done a huge amount of running.

However, this meant I got onto the start line of the third fixture of the Surrey League feeling relatively rested. The race was in Teddington at a fairly nondescript parkland area next to Teddington Lock. I'm not sure why it was held here given its proximity to Richmond Park which has some great courses. The race route was flat throughout out with hard patches along the tow path and soft very muddy sections of grass.

I spotted Phil Wicks, the winner of the previous week's County Champs warming up, plus a couple of other runners such as Alex Bruce Littlewood who had not been present the week before. As a result the front end of the field looked stronger than the week before.

The race went off fast and a group of about 12 of us went through the first mile at a very quick pace. I suspect we were close to if not below five minute pace at that stage. Wicks, James (my flat mate) and Paskar (obviously recovered from his travels) started building the gap at this point and I sat in with a group of around seven others.

I knew I'd have to relax the pace a bit otherwise I was heading for trouble so I focused on running as quickly as I could with as little effort as possible. Just after two miles the group split again as Chris B, Liam White and Alex B-L pulled away. Paul Rodgers also came through strongly at this point and started chasing down the leaders.

I was left with a couple of my team mates running ten or twenty metres or so in front of me. That was more or less how the rest of the race unfolded, nobody came past me after this stage and I worked on trying to bridge the gap to my team mates. Towards the end of the five miles I started to reel them in as I heard the competition behind me but in the end there was a little too much to do.

The race was fast and without big hills to slow everyone down the gaps between the leaders were relatively small. I could see second and third, plus the rest of the field in front of me for the duration. I ended up finishing 10th, the same position as the last league race, although I think the field was better yesterday so I was fairly pleased with my day's work.

The main aim of the day was to make it impossible for our rivals Thames to catch our lead at the top of the table and it looks like that has probably been achieved. Herne Hill took, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th and closed the team by 30th to give ourselves a 100 point lead going into the last race in February. It's now unlikely Thames can catch us unless we have a shocker next month.

Results HERE in Excel, follow the link. Interesting to note that's there's less than a minute between 5th and 12th showing just how hard you have to work at the end of these races. If you look back, there's always a stream of bodies coming after you!

Run summary:
25minutes warm up. Approximately 5 miles XC in 28.45. 25 minutes warm down.

Total - 10 miles.

Two easy days

I'm just home from today's Surrey League race and I'm done. So tired. As a result, I'm glad I've had two easy days in the run up to today. They weren't entirely intentional, work has cut short my running a bit this week.

Feeling it

Really tired tonight. Bed is calling me. The combination of a long day at work plus last night's training has caught up with me.

Tonight I did the session I had planned. A steady 50 minute 8 miler including 5 quick strides along my street.

Mixing it at Ladywell

[Ladywell Arena]

I had a meeting in the City this afternoon which finished around 5.30 which meant I was able to travel straight to the track and got there much earlier than normal. After a twenty minute warm up and a few strides and drills we got down to a session of 6/8*1,000m off a 3 minute recovery.

Everyone was discussing this weekend's County results. Most of the guys did the Kent Champs and did really well, our group contained the winner and a few of the top ten. Quality was a theme for the evening. The group was almost at full strength tonight. We had a 3.39, 1500m runner, two 1.50 800m runners, one 2.17 marathon runner and two 2.21 marathon runners. Plus a couple of relative jokers like me. We were also joined by Conrad Williams the 400m runner who I think picked up medals at both the Delhi Commonwealths and the European Champs last year with a PB of 45 seconds. He jumped in for three reps as part of his endurance training.

My rep times were, 3.03, 3.02, 2.59, 2.57, 2.58, 2.57. I was tempted to do all 8 as I was feeling relatively good however I decided against it as I have a five mile cross country race this Saturday which I want to be fresh for.

Coach also handed me my training schedule for the next month. I'm in for some fun.
